Being an Ancient Astrologer in the Modern Western World
I still remember the moment I had to tell a business advisor about my business idea. My stomach twisted as I said the words: “I’m an astrologer.” The room went quiet. A raised eyebrow, a pause… and I felt the weight of skepticism pressing down on me. That moment made me realize something I had known for a long time: being an astrologer today can be lonely and marginalizing.
It wasn’t always like this. Astrology used to be an important part of everyday life. Up until the 1500s, astrology and astronomy were connected — two sides of the same coin. Scholars studied the stars not only to understand the sky, but also to guide medicine, law, and governments. By the 1700s, however, things began to change. Astrology slowly separated from astronomy. Churches and governments questioned it and limited its influence. Gradually, astrologers were no longer respected in the same way.
I practice Hellenistic astrology, an ancient form of Western astrology. Its roots go back to Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq) and later developed further in Greece and Rome. This tradition was practiced for centuries but remained largely hidden from the modern world because the original texts were written in Greek and Latin and were rarely translated. In the mid-1990s, Robert Schmidt and other scholars from Project Hindsight began translating these works, bringing this ancient knowledge back into modern practice. I am proud to be considered among the third generation of Hellenistic astrologers in the modern revival, carrying forward wisdom that had been hidden for thousands of years.
Today, in much of the Western world, astrology is often seen as a hobby or as something unscientific. For someone like me building a business in this field, that skepticism is very real. I have felt it when speaking to lawyers, accountants, or government clerks about my work. I have felt it when asking for support from organizations that help women entrepreneurs, only to be dismissed or mocked. The business knowledge available to me felt limited because my work did not fit their idea of “serious” business.
This isolation can be difficult. It is not just about professional recognition — it is about living in a world that questions your perspective. Astrology is a form of divination; it works through patterns, symbolism, and connection to something larger than ourselves. Yet when you try to explain it in ordinary, rational terms, it often does not fit neatly into those frameworks. The tension between a logical society and symbolic, divinatory work can feel constant.
Even within this loneliness, there is clarity. Astrology reminds me that my work has meaning, even if others do not always see it. It helps people understand themselves and the rhythms of their lives. Perhaps the lesson is this: being on the marginalized side is not necessarily a bad thing. It can be a place of authenticity, influence, and courage.
Astrology is my passion and my calling. That is why I created New Moon Inner Healing, even when some voices suggested I was out of my mind for starting such a business. I always knew this was the path I was meant to follow, even if not everyone could understand it.
Being an ancient astrologer in the modern world is not easy. It can feel isolating, but it is also deeply necessary. This divinatory language does not stop shining simply because some people refuse to look up. As above, so below. By helping others navigate life through ancient astrology, I am doing the work my soul is meant to do in this lifetime.
